The Right Materials For Your New Windows

Windows cost a lot of money to replace, so you better be sure that this is an upgrade you need. Of course, many homes need to have their windows replaced before any other element because they receive such rough treatment. Windows are slammed and generally roughly handled by homeowners. This isn't even taking into account how Mother Nature can damage the outside of your windows. Obviously, functionality is not the only reason to replace your windows. Many people do it purely because they want to improve the style.

Windows are nice because they give the inside and outside of your home a new look. There aren't many upgrades that are so fun and functional at the same time. Of course, you need to find the material that is going to be the most suitable for your property. This article compares some of the most common window materials, and when and where they are best used.

Sliding Windows: Avoid Wood and Metal

If you want sliding windows, you should avoid wooden or metal sashes. Metal can rust and become hard to slide. Wood is definitely the worst material for sliding fixtures because it can be hard to open and close. When wood gets wet and becomes lopsided, it might not slide within the window fixture. There are hybrid options with wood fixtures that have PVC cores, meaning they have more structural stability and consistency than a solid wood product, but you still have to avoid them on sliding fixtures. These products can be perfect on casement or fixed window styles. Wood will never be the most practical window sash material, but it is always going to be popular simply because of how it looks.

Vinyl, PVC and fiberglass are probably the best materials for sliding windows. They have smooth surfaces, and this makes them perfect in that they create very little friction when sliding. They work much better than wood or aluminum sashes.

Large Sashes: Go With Fiberglass

Fiberglass is a great material for larger sashes. It is light enough that it will still be easy to open and close, but is strong enough that it can hold the weight of large glass panes.

You can have a window installation expert come to your house and help you determine what material will be the best for each fixture. Obviously, most of your fixtures will be the same material, but it might be necessary to have some different options around your home for certain fixtures.
