Start by measuring the width of the opening at the top and bottom. These measurements might differ slightly, but they shouldn't be off by much.
You should use a level to check the vertical sides of the rough opening to see if they are straight. You will want to measure the width at the narrowest point to ensure that it is close to the measurement of the top and bottom widths. If any of these measurements show discrepancies, you will need to adjust the rough opening to fit your door frame.
2. Check to see if the floor is level.

Be sure to trim the high side of the jamb -- this is the side opposite your marking on the rough opening. This will eliminate potential drag and bring the bottom of your new door jamb flush with the slope of your flooring.
